Injunction
Details about the historic injunction.
A last minute reprieve for the Deer of Invermere.
On February 9th at the Supreme Court of BC in Vancouver a temporary injunction has been granted against the District of Invermere ordering them to stop the culling of the deer which was about to start today. The temporary injunction is effective immediately and will be in effect at least until February 24, 2012 or until the next court date, but until that time all culling activity will cease.
This is a major coup for the dedicated group - "Invermere Deer protection Organization" - a grassroot group of people who recently held a protest and are now gaining momentum in support to stop the culls that have swept through the small towns of BC.
The BC government issued licenses to Cranbrook who killed 25 deer over Christmas and over 100 deer were killed in Kimberley in January. Despite hundreds of signatures on petitions and an overall outcry from the outspoken citizens of Invermere who decided to stand up to this decision that was made by "Deer Committees" behind closed doors who also happen to be the contractors to kill the deer in Cranbrook and Kimberley), the killing of a hundred deer was to begin in Invermere this weekend. People were shocked and appalled particularly by the cruel and inhumane technique that was going to be used to kill the deer. A deer is enticed into a trap that looks somewhat like a hockey net and then when struggling is shot in the head with a steel bolt which may or may not kill them the first time.
This method has been discredited by many animal welfare organizations such as the Humane Society throughout Canada and United States. In addition, citizens are particularly angry that there was never proper consultation amongst the public and that the many humane alternatives for deer management were never ever considered.
