Monkey Bar Protest on TV & Radio
July 6, 2001
Caged 'Monkey' Greets Bar Patrons
We had an
outstanding demo last night- Several dozen activists (as reported
by Channel 8 News)
made life less than happy for the Tsuchiya Brothers and
assorted goons at
their big bash. Faith Scheideman was our prisoner
monkey--dressed in
stripes and crouched in a cage. We handed out many
flyers detailing
why monkeys don't belong in bars, and we slowed patrons'
entry to the bar
by our exuberant, if not terribly well organized picket
line.
We had excellent
support from cars passing by--who honked and gave us the
shaka sign.
Machiko Mann and 2 friends shouted in Japanese to trolleys
full of Japanese
tourists to boycott the bar. The bar called HPD and the
number of squad
cars and cushmans multiplied like alien species in a mamane
grove. One of the
officers was seen hugging a Blue Tropix security
guard...and the
officers did nothing when Cindy Newberg was hit by an
impatient driver
entering the parking lot--but they did their swagger bit
and tried to
intimidate us 8)
We were the lead
story on the KHNL (ch8) (NBC affiliate) 10:00 news, and
Darren Tsuchiya
looked pretty defensive in his defense of the bar keeping
monkeys.
Mahalo plenty to
everyone who came out last night
Cathy
A Deejay on Star
101 was also heard discussing and supporting our protest.
