Meadow Gold Dairy

The unlined manure lagoon at the Meadow Gold Dairy in Waimanalo, O'ahu, on state owned land, continues to pose a threat to local residents who must live with the percolation of untreated animal waste into their water table and finally into the ocean.

The dairy, which has been limited by DLNR to 600 cows for environmental reasons , will be transferred to the UH College of Tropical Agriculture, Human Resources and Human and Animal Nutrition in December, 2001

There is no guarantee that UH will be a better steward of the land or more humane towards the animals. The dairy industry routinely separates babies from their mothers; they keep the females in intensive confinement for future milk production; the males are given away to anyone who wants them- usually for veal.

Calves are kept in wire cages and fed an unnatural diet for months whilst their mothers' milk is sold for human consumption.
