Racquet Restringing

Restringing your racquet is the most overlooked maintenance requirement for all racquet sport players. After all, the strings are the only piece of equipment that touch the ball or the birdie. You are missing out on your best performance if you have not strung your racquet for a while. If you are not playing to your level, chances are you need to restring. Here are the 4 steps to restringing:

1. Restring regularly
All strings lose tension and resiliency over time, even if a racquet is not used regularly. For consistent, top performance from your racquet and string, remember to restring as often in a year as you play in a week. For example, if you play: 1 time a week, restring a minimum of 1 time a year; 2 times a week, restring a minimum of 2 times a year; etc.

2. Consider your style of play
What’s your type of stroke and playing style? How much power and spin do you generate? Are you a frequent string breaker? These are important questions to ask yourself.

3. Determine your needs
If you don’t break strings, choose Playability strings that offer more feel, added power, or are very easy on your arm. If you break strings frequently, prefer a firm feel, or need more tension retention, choose a Durability string.

4. Select the proper gauge and tension
Strings come in 4 basic gauges: 15, 16, 17 or 18. Thinner gauge strings (higher numbers) are livelier but less durable. Thicker gauge strings (lower numbers) have better tension retention and are more durable. Prince racquets should be strung within recommended tensions indicated on the inside of the racquet throat: Tighter strings give more control. Looser strings give more power.
