The fat derived from animal carcasses.

Aspic
 
Savoury jelly derived from meat or fish..

Beeswax
 
The yellow to greyish-brow wax secreted by honeybees for constructing honeycomb..

Brushes
 
Animal hair can be used for paint, shaving, bath and toothbrushes. Watch for "Natural bristle.".

Capsules
 
Usually made from gelatine, vegetarian alternatives are becoming more readily available.

Carmine (carmine, cochineal, or carminic acid)
 
Red colouring made from a ground up insect. Found in bottled juices, coloured pasta, some candies and frozen popsicles.

Calcium Stearate
 
Mineral typically derived from cows or hogs. Found in garilc salt, vanilla, meat tenderizers, and salad dressing mixes..

Capric Acid (decanoic acid)
 
Animal fats. Added to ice cream, candy, baked goods, chewing gum, liquor and is often not specified in ingredients lists.

Casein
 
A protein derived from cow's milk.

Cashmere
 
A clothing material that comes from the underbelly of a special breed of Himalayan goat.

Caviar
 
Fish eggs. The fish must be killed to obtain the eggs.

Chitin
 
Produced from crab and shrimp shells.

Cochineal
 
A natural red dye derived from the dried bodies from the female scaled insect Dactylopius coccus costa. May be listed a colour "120" when used in food products.

Elastin
 
The fibrous, tough, connective tissue surrounding the muscle and found in elastic tissues such as the walls of the arteries. Used in cosmetics.

Fish Scales
 
Crushed scales are sometimes used for a shimmering effect in cosmetics.

Gelatin/Gelatine
 
A thickening, stabilizing, emulsifying agent made by boiling animal skin, ligaments, bones, sinews, or other connective tissues (usually cattle or pigs).

Glycerine
 
A colourless, sweet, thick. oily liquid. It can be derived from either animal or vegetable fats.

Honey
 
A food my by bees, fo bees. Avoided by most vegans.

Isinglass
 
A fining agent derived from the swim bladders of certain fist, especially the Chinese sturgeon. Used in the production of many beers and wines.

Keratin
 
A tough, insoluble protein that is the main strucutral constituent of hair, nails, feathers, hooves and horns.

Lactose
 
The sugar dervied from cow's milk.

Lutein
 
Deep yellow colouring from marigolds or egg yolks. Commerical food colouring.

Myristic Acid (tetradecanoic acid)
 
Animal fats found in ice cream, candy, jellied desserts, and baked goods.

Oleic Acid
 
Animal tallow. Found in butter, cheese, vegetable fats and oils, spice flavouring, candy, ice cream, soaps and cosmetics.

Palmatic Acid
 
Animal or vegetable fats.

Pancreatin (Pancreatic acid)
 
Cows or hogs. DIgestive aids.

PEG 120 (methyl glucose ether)
 
Derived from fish oil. Found in cosmetics.

PPG 20 (methyl glucose ether)
 
Derived from fish oil. Found in cosmetics.

PEG (oleyl alcohol)
 
Derived from fish oil. Found in cosmetics..

Pepsin
 
Enzyme from pig stomachs. Used with rennet to make cheese.

Propolis
 
Resinous cement collected from bees. Food supplement and ingredient in "natural" toothpaste.

Rennin (Rennet)
 
A coagulating enzyme obtained from a young animal's stomach (usually a calf's stomach). Rennin is used to curdle milk in such foods as cheese and junket- a soft pudding-like dessert..

Royal Jelly
 
A secretion from the salivary glands of worker bees..

Shellac
 
A glazing agent obtained from the resin produced by the lac insect. Used as a glaze on some lollies, chocolate coated nuts, etc. and is a waxy coating on some fruits.

Stearic Acid
 
Tallow, other animal fats and oils. Vanilla flavouring, chewing gum, baked goods, beverages, candies, soap, suppositories, pill coatings.

Tallow
 
A type of animal fat. Used as an ingredient in some soaps and candies.

Vitamin A (A1, retinol)
 
A vitamin obtained from vegetables, egg yolks, or fish liver oil.

Vitamin B12
 
Vitamin produced by microorganisms and found in all animal products. Synthetic form for vegans listed as cyanocobalamin.

Vitamin D (D1, D1, D8)
 
D1 is produced by humans with exposure to sunlight. D1 (ergocaciferol) is made from plants or yeast, D8 comes from fish liver oils or lanolin.

Whey
 
Watery liquid that separates from the solids (curds) of milk in cheese making. Crackers, breads, cakes, processed foods.
