Meditating Simply

Meditation is a real chance for you to connect with yourself. Most of us go through life knowing the person we spend the most time with, the least.

What meditation is happens to be a question that volumes have been written about. Anytime there is such a lot of discussion on an issue, you can be sure that no one really knows the answer. That's what is so nice about the Zen approach to it. Zen essentially says that it doesn't matter what we know, because we never really do (my son Kyron says, "No one knows anything"). It's not even important to get something out of meditation. What is important, is just to practise it. In other words, make 'the journey, the destination'.

So how does one meditate. Well it really isn't necessary to wrap oneself up in the shape of a pretzel. All you need to do is sit quietly with calmness and empty your mind. Some may think that is impossible, because all kinds of thoughts keep running through one's head. That's okay provided you don't try to get rid of these thoughts - just let them fly and they will eventually find their way out. When we try to force them not to come, they appear. Don't believe me? Alright, so right now don't think of a monkey! See what I mean?

As you sit there with inner silence, you begin to appreciate just how beautiful emptiness really is. We don't meditate to get anything. In fact, if you were to do it for any ulterior motive, you may get what you want, but you would spoil the meditation. Hence, the quote 'no gain, no pain'! Meditation itself is the gift - that priceless chance to be at peace with yourself.
