American horse transports to Canada for slaughter

Animals' Angels investigate the transport of American horses to Canada for slaughter

June 20, 2007

The U.S. movement to ban horse slaughter has expanded, with the 2006 closing of two Texas slaughter plants. The last remaining plant in Illinois has recently opened due to an appeal by its owners, Cavel International.

It is expected that this setback will keep Cavel in business at least in the short term. It is now illegal to slaughter horses, or to sell, possess or transport horsemeat for human consumption in every state except Illinois.

Regardless, thousands of U.S. horses are still being shipped to Canada and Mexico for slaughter, and this will remain so until the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act is passed.
