An interesting game which shows the importance of understanding what the ideas behind an opening are. The Morra gambit is supposed to allow white a developmental advantage for the loss of a pawn. However, if white doesn't make use of this advantage properly, the lost pawn can be a haunting element for much of the game as happens here. White does regain the pawn and manages to force a draw (move 48). The extensive sequences that follow the draw move was an attempt to see whether some advantage could have been gained - it does not appear so and looks pretty risky anyway (especially since white could go down a pawn again this late in the game).

idea shall be to get black K deep into back ranks into Qside so we can eliminate Ps on Kside - unfortunately, it doesn't seem possible to get the black K far enough away, so we didn't attempt this (the 48.Re2 line shown actually appears to win, but this is because black makes poor moves) 48...Ra4
