Dan Vaillancourt
Former Cowichan Young Carers Program
Director
After 28 years as a teacher and administrator in
schools in Canada, the United States, Brazil and
Greece, Dan was hired by the Cowichan Family
Caregivers Support Society to facilitate the
Cowichan Young Carers Program (formerly Youth
Caregivers Project) in January, 2010. During this
time he has assembled a wonderful group of youth in
the Cowichan Valley who are caregivers, former
caregivers and supporters of caregivers. Together
they have created a documentary film entitled
Ending the Silence which they are presenting
to schools, social service agencies, and community
organizations, with the goal of raising awareness
about the need to support young carers. He believes
that the more people are aware of the joys and
challenges of young carers, the better the Society
will be able to respond to the needs of these
unsung heroes.
