Notable events for 2005


January 2005

In Ladysmith a reception was held to inform the community about our services.

Ranjana attended continuing meetings for the Cowichan Lodge Day Centre program.


February 2005

Cowichan Lodge announced that the Day Program would return to Walden House as requested by caregivers.

The education facilitator organized a session on 'lifting' through Malaspina College home support training program.

We received funds from the Mid-Island Family Caregivers Network for books for caregivers.


March 2005

We were notified by VIHA that the proposal for the project for First Nations Families caring for Elders: Recommendations for Support was not successful. They suggested that we apply again at a later date.

New Horizons denied funding for the same project.

A decision was made to continue the service in Ladysmith at the conclusion of the Ladysmith Expansion Program (March 31).

We were notified by VIHA Aboriginal Health of approval for funding for the service guide project.


April 2005

The Vancouver Foundation also notified us of funding approval for the service guide project.

An awareness-raising and fundraising event was held in Ladysmith.

Contact was made with the Senior Care Foundation to begin conversations.

With the Caregivers' Association of BC and the Family Caregivers Network, Ranjana made a presentation at the Provincial Home Care Conference in Vancouver about support services for caregivers.


May 2005

A reception for organizations supporting family caregivers was held during Caregivers Week at City Hall in Duncan.

Our first annual The Shawnigan Lake Walk proved to be our most successful fundraising event ever and we have decided to make this an annual event. A marketing facilitator has been contracted to help make next year's walk even better.

At the request of the Ladysmith Friendly Visitors Society, Shannon, Garth, Ranjana and Michael made a presentation to them about our services.


August 2005

We first informed VIHA of our need for interim funding but because of VIHA's reorganization there was nowhere to take this concern further.

We were notified that we would receive funding from the National Population Health Fund proposal through the Public Health Agency of Canada for the book project.


September 2005

The book project Supporting Caregiving Families: A Guide for Service started.

Newspaper articles about the project appeared in two papers: the Citizen and the News Leader.

Janice, Maggie and Garth made a presentation to the Chemainus Health Centre Family Council.

A Donations Facilitator was contracted to build a donations program for the society.

The education facilitator organized a series on end of life care with Cowichan Valley Hospice Society.


October 2005

A new Moving On group was formed at the request of some caregivers in Chemainus.

When the new VIHA structure had taken form an urgent submission was made for sustainability funding for 4 years at $32,000 per year.


November 2005

Garth made a presentation to the Arbutus Ridge nurses group at their request.


December 2005

The submission for sustainability funding from VIHA was denied. We requested and got a meeting to discuss this further.

Ranjana, Garth and board member, John Simpson, met with VIHA's Chief Operating Officer and the Director of Home and Community Care.

Throughout the year the education facilitator attended Eldercare Education meetings to plan a one day conference for 2006. We also attended core group meetings with the BC Health Promotion Coalition.

Throughout the year the following requests for funding were made: Cowichan Hospital Women's Auxiliary (denied) C.V.R.D (denied) Ladysmith District Hospital Auxiliary (denied) Ladysmith Credit Union (received $500) Town of Ladysmith (received $300) Island Homes Realty, Ladysmith (received $250) Ladysmith Kinsmen (received $1000)
