A Brief History of the Kildonan Tennis Club

Originally the Kildonan Canoe Club, the Kildonan Tennis Club is located on the east side of the historic Red River at 17 Valhalla Drive. It has been compared to a parkland setting set amidst one of the most densely populated enclaves in Winnipeg.

The club was found in 1937 as a non-profit club for the provision of recreation and relaxation to members of the community, at an affordable cost. In its 63 years of existence, it has provided an amateur sports base for local residents and their friends. Paddling highlighted its early years.

More recently, the Kildonan Tennis and Canoe Club, as it was called up until 1998, became a Tennis Club, with a reduced emphasis on the River. The KTCC was thoroughly renovated in the 1980’s. The courts were rebuilt in 1980's after intense fundraising efforts, and the Clubhouse was renovated in 1989.

In recent years, KTCC was forced to sell off its land (except for the Tennis courts) to maintain its existence. We were pleased to forge a cooperative agreement with the Lions Club, and now have a harmonious relationship with the Lions Cove. During this transition period, our historical Clubhouse was completely demolished, and replaced with our wonderful new Clubhouse. At the same time new tennis courts, fencing and lighting were constructed.

The Kildonan Tennis Club has thrived and survived alternatively through booming periods and recessions. Throughout, there has always been a spirit of camaraderie amongst the many members who run and operate this non-profit club. That fact was amply evident at the 40th (1977), 50’s (1987), and 60th (1997) Anniversary Reunions. Three hundred former members, from across Canada and into the U.S.A., returned to refresh memories of those meaningful years of their lives.

The Kildonan Tennis Club looks forward to a promising future, with a thriving Tennis membership, and successful Tennis Tournaments.
