Diagram showing the field of vision of horses in the Kill Pen at Natural Valley Farms horse slaughterhouse in Neudorf, Saskatchewan. The pen is a cattle pen and completely inappropriate for horses.
The horse is pushed into the kill pen from behind. A very loud compressor immediately goes off startling the horse. To his left the horse can see the horse that had been ahead of him in line suspended, stabbed in the jugular and bleeding out. The suspender must repeatedly swing the suspended horse to get up enough speed to push the horse around the corner of the suspensory railing. This inevitably causes blood to spray everywhere - the horse in the pen sees all of this. Because of the head stanchion at the front of the kill pen the horse can then see the suspended horse immediately in front of him. Many attempt to reach the suspended horse. The wall along the right side of the pen is not long enough to prevent the horse in the pen from seeing the butchering line. The hock cutter - the first stop just around the bend of the railing - is within the full view of the horse in the kill pen.
