Horse in Kill Waiting Pen with Stage 3 Ocular Squamous Cell Carcinoma ("Cancer Eye"). The diseased tissue had been allowed to grow to such a degree that it pushed the horse's eye out of the socket. The necrotic tissue extended at least an inch from her face. Other horses incessantly tried to bite the protruding, weeping injury.
According to CFIA's Compromised Animals Policy this horse should have been immediately euthanized and not transported. At a minimum, the slaughterplant is legally obligated to pen injured horses for their own protection - this was not done in this case.
