Full-term foal discovered in Natural Valley Farms' Rendering Pit on February 26, 2008. The foal had been born alive, as indicated by the bruising on his face in the shape of tire tracks (bruising does not occur unless the heart is able to pump blood to the surface). His abdomen had been ripped into by the coyotes who frequent the Pit but his ears had been cut cleanly from his head. The foal did not have a captive bolt pistol wound hole on his head - we are not sure how he died.
The presence of a foal at the slaughter plant though indicates that his mother was likely loaded and transported too close to term - which is illegal in both the US and Canada. It must have been a very difficult ride for her and the circumstances of the foal's birth are painful to even consider.
