What is happening with the Yupi campaign?
Some Mexican colleagues went last week to the Morelia zoo and took some pictures of Yupi and compared them to the pictures that I took 3 years ago. The pictures show that Yupi is skinnier now and her coat is greener because of algae, so we need to get her out of that zoo ASAP.
But besides the news on Yupi's appearance, we are glad to let you know that everything is going very well with the campaign in Mexico and abroad.
I will be delivering the petitions to the new zoo director in Morelia in person on behalf of Zoocheck Canada and CATCA and all the International Save Yupi Coalition (which I coordinate), in early May.
We haven't count all the petitions yet, but we have something around about 80-90 thousand signatures.
The chances for Yupi to be released and to be relocated to a better location in a more suitable climate seem very realistic and positive now, and we have a couple of potential good places for Yupi to be moved, either in Canada or Europe.
In Mexico, we have a wonderful team helping us to achieve this goal, lead by the Mexican Green Party and we count with very dedicated national NGO's such as AnimaNaturalis, COMARINO and dozens of other NGO's, animal groups and societies all over Mexico, especially in Michoacan, Mexico.
The spokesperson of this campaign in Mexico is the well known Mexican soap opera actress: Monika Sanchez.
I will be participating in several national and local press conferences, in lots of meetings and discussing the next phase of this campaign in Mexico with the Mexican Green Party and my animal colleagues.

Seal hunt
As you may be aware, the seal hunt is happening again, but there is not a real existing commercial market for the pelts, but our federal government is still subsidizing again this atrocity against nature, violating animal welfare and conservation regulations in all possible ways.
The sealers will stockpile the seal skins as there is not a market for the seal skins, after many countries banned the seal fur trade recently, most recently the European Union in 2010, which started to literally kill the commercial seal hunt in Canada, and then Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan in 2011 closing other important markets.
Why the commercial seal hunt keeps happening?
Because the federal government supports it and they want to show the world that they can do it even when it cost money from our tax payers to maintain it.
They are desperate to keep continuing to have this annual spring massacre of the baby seals back East, but that doesn't mean they will be able to keep it up for a long time.
The end is near and now there is not much to be done anymore, except wait.
We just hope our federal government accept soon their defeat and stop this senseless bloody annual event once and for all.

FRIDAY, 4/20 - Get "Baked" Vegan sale to raise awareness about UBC's animal research and funds for Stop UBC Animal Research. 1:30-6 PM, Vancouver Art Gallery, 811 Hornby Street. NOTE: Bakers can drop off goods the night before. See link for details.
SUNDAY, 4/22 - Stop UBC Animal Research walks in Earth Day parade, complete with costumes, banners, signs.
Meet at 11:00 AM at Grandview Highway and Commercial Drive, just north of Commercial/Broadway Skytrain station.
MONDAY, 4/23 - Outreach at UBC campus.
Activities will include Stop UBC Animal Research members dressed in animal costumes, distributing educational materials. Will also distribute and post whistleblower fliers and posters to encourage those inside UBC's labs to come forward with information. Noon-2PM, UBC Student Union Building.
THURSDAY, 4/26 - Public outreach at Vancouver Commercial Drive Skytrain Station.
5-7 PM, Commercial and Broadway, in front of Shopper's Drugmart.
SATURDAY, 4/28 - Do No Harm Dog Walk and Vegan Picnic. Events in Kamloops, Victoria, and Vancouver.
