MOTORCADE FOR THE SEALS 2011
Organized by CATCA and HOPE-CARE
March 26th, Saturday at 10:00AM
10:00 AM - meet at the waterfront parking lot on
Beach and Bute, Vancouver
10:30 - vehicle decoration and media reception
11:00 - departure from Vancouver
12:00 - media reception in Squamish
1:00 PM - media reception in Whistler
1:15 PM We will go for lunch in Whistler and then we
return to Vancouver
The distance from Vancouver to Whistler is 120km/75mi which is 1/3 of 360km/ 225mi - the distance from Vancouver to Kamloops. At 1m/3.3' per seal, 360km/ 225mi is the length of a single file of 360,000 dead baby seals lined up along any highway.
Anthony Marr has taken his anti-sealing message to the United States by leading his Motorcade for the Seals in numerous US cities.
On the other hand, the co-organizer Ericka Ceballos of CATCA, has taken her message to Europe. Due in big part to her efforts, the Europen Union in 2010 adopted a ban on the import trade of all seal products. She was honoured by the AV-AD Society of BC as "Animal Campaigner of the Year 2010".
Anthony Marr will lead the motorcade by motorcycle, rain or shine.
We need people to come and participate in the event!
If you would like to participate, pls. tell me how
you can help: 1) Can you drive? Can you bring your
car to the motorcade before and after we take off to
Whistler?
2) We are looking for people to hold banners for
about 45 minutes here ? Can you do that?
3) Can you bring family or friends to the event? 4)
Do you know people in Whistler?
Pls. send me an e-mail if you can help us with any of the above at: ericka@catcahelpanimals.org
See you there!
Ericka

**IMPORTANT NEWS: http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/ russia-bans-winter-den-hunt-for-bears-countless-cubs-saved-118076739.html
What it is not mentioned here in this article and
nobody knows, is that it was CATCA the one that
suggested to create some arguments against this cruel
hunt at the European Commission
about one and half years ago. Poland was the first EU
country that raised this issue at the EU last year.
As a result, the European Commission raised its
concerns to Russia (but they denied this hunt at
first), and then CATCA helped to gather proof of this
cruel winter den hunt in several countries online.
This proof was then submited at the EC and the EU
banned the importation of brown bears parts from
Russia. Russia could not deny this hunt anymore. As a
last consecuence, Russia now has banned this winter
hunting. This would not have happen without the EU
pressure.
**From Senator Mac Harb:
I have recently tabled a Notice of Motion directing the Senate Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans to find specific ways to help support Canada's Inuit and aboriginal hunters affected by the European Union ban on commercial seal products. I am pleased to report that the motion was seconded by Senator Charlie Watt, who represents Northern Quebec in the Senate. Senator Watt also sits on the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans. Along with looking at ways to help these Canadians take advantage of their unique exemption as subsistence hunters, I believe that this motion will compel the government to move past its futile efforts to challenge the EU ban on commercial seal products at the World Trade Organization. As we know, this challenge will take several years, will cost millions of dollars and is unlikely to overturn the carefully drafted EU ban. Senator Watt and I will need the support of our colleagues in the Senate to ensure the motion passes and this issue is studied at the Committee. I would therefore encourage you to contact the members of the Senate, by email or letter using the link and address below, urging them to support Canada's Inuit and aboriginal communities by voting in favour of the motion. Canadians living in Canada's Northern and Atlantic communities expect and deserve a proactive, viable strategy from their government as the commercial seal hunt comes to an end once and for all. I thank you for your interest and contribution to achieving this goal.
Sincerely,
SENATOR MAC HARB

**This is from our colleague Earl (CVFAF) It has been a rather bad day at the Shelter. We had a hurricane that we just got the tail of, and our sweet little Carola has passed away.
See: http://www.cvfaf.org/Hurricane.html
We have a bit of damage, and we are still trying to repair some of the fences that were damaged by the wind and rain storm. Donations will be greatly appreciated.
This morning Kary, our beautiful horse came down with a very bad cold. She is being watched over by one of our vets, so that she doesn't get pneumonia. She is comfortable now, and is loving the attention...If anyone can help, it will be appreciated as the vet staying with her is quite expensive, but Kary is worth the cost.
Cheers for now,
Regards to all,
Earle, Coqui, and the CVFAF Gang
