Shame on the DFO!!!!!
Seal hunt deadline extended to end of May Government
gives hunters more time to meet their quota and find
markets for their pelts May 12th 2010 The annual East
Coast seal hunt has been extended until the end of
the month to allow hunters more time to meet their
quota and find markets for their pelts.
The hunt opened April 8 but has struggled this year with weak market demand and only one buyer. Federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea said in a release today that extending the end of the hunt from May 15 until May 31 will ensure sealers "make the best of their opportunities in difficult economic times." Hunters have killed an estimated 60,000 seals so far out of a total allowable quota of 330,000 animals. Pelts are selling this year from about $15 to $21 each.

Our friend and colleague Sheryl Fink (IFAW)
commented: Once again, we are presented with further
evidence that Canada's Department of Fisheries and
Oceans is either being deliberately dishonest, or
they are simply ignorant of the facts concerning
Canada's commercial seal hunt. A look at the Marine
Mammal Regulations shows that the close date for the
commercial harp seal "harvest" is June 15, not May
15. In effect, the Minister has shortened the seal
hunt, rather than extended it!!!
While we'd like to thank the Minister for unwittingly
cutting short the cruel and wasteful seal slaughter,
one has to wonder: when a Minister is so unaware of
the basic regulations surrounding her own seal hunt,
how can anything she says possibly be believed? In
addition, it appears as though this whole
announcement is a farce. Minister Shea's grand
display of support for the sealing industry, to
"allow sealers more time" to kill seals is nothing
more than show: a conversation with a DFO
representative today confirmed that there is only a
single boat out sealing at this time. - Sheryl

Six Tigers Abandoned by a Circus in Cunit, Spain, are Still There
6 Tigers have not been moved despite being abandoned by a circus two months ago. The animals have been living in bad conditions for five years in a covered cage.
The article states that once the authorities strengthened the cages of the tigers, avoiding their escape, their interest in the case has waned. The animals have no space for exercise, no environmental enrichment, and their claws are overgrown to the point of growing into the pads of their feet. The legality of the animals cannot be verified as the owner did not have the proper documentation. Foundation FAADA has located other organizations that need seizure and placement. Lamentably, the authorities have no interest in creating a rescue center for such animals.

These two similar stories are from a continent apart,
about two kind compassionated women, who got killed
while trying to rescue a dog on the highway. The
coincidences are eerie! God bless them.

**Social Services in Atizapan, Mexico is organizing a bullfight as a fundraiser for the people of low income!
