THANK YOU!

Yupi the Polar bear (her real name is Yupik, but everybody calls her Yupi in Mexico), is a female that came originally from Alaska, after the mother was killed by a hunter. She has been at the Morelia zoo since 1992, so she is almost 20 years now.

Her enclosure is made of concrete and is all barren, with only a couple of dead trunks where she desperately tries to hide from the sun everyday.

She has no soil, sand, wooden chips snor nothing soft where to lay down or to dig like normally Polar bears do.

Yupi suffers already of some stereotypical behavior problems, her fur is covered with green algae and she suffers terribly because of the heat and the sun in her barren concrete enclosure.

Click on this link to read more information of this campaign and to watch the video we took of Yupi in 2009: http://catcahelpanimals.org/yupien.html

In that video you can watch one of the several stereotypical behaviors that Yupi displays.

Other abnormal behaviors that she shows are to swim few meters by the window of her pool, stop and return to the point of origin, and few seconds she repeats the same action several times in a row. Also, she already displays several other types of stereotypic behavior, repeating her movements over and over when swimming or walking or laying down, which is caused by the stress, frustration and the empty artificial environment of the bear.

Polar bears can live up to 38 years in captivity, so we are urging the Morelia zoo to release her to go to a better facility in a better climate.

There are many places that are interested in taking Yupi in Europe.

We have now a petition online for Yupi:

The zoo director first said that he would consider to let go Yupi if we could guarantee that she will survive for at least 5 years at her new home, which it is senseless and we can't guarantee nobody lives! Then he said he would not allow her to go abroad and that they were making renovations on her areas. Look at the video:

They even gave Yupi a toy for the cameras purpose!

Unfortunately we have some sad news: The Zoo director passed away of a bactery that he contracted at the zoo.

After a long discussion we all decided to stick to the original plan. On early May the petitions will be delivered to the temporary zoo director, the assistant of the former zoo director.
