E-commerce Report 2013

Internet trade of elephant ivory in Africa and Asia

This is our new "Internet trade of elephant ivory in Africa and Asia - Report 2013", made in a cooperation with our colleagues of Campaigns Against the Cruelty to Animals in Canada.

This report was delivered in person to the heads of delegations of five continents at the CITES CoP16 in March, and also to the CITES Secretary-General Mr John Scanlon, to Mr. Wim Wijnstekers (the former CITES S.-General), to the CITES Secretariat, to Mr. Achim Steiner UNEP Executive Director, the Director of Interpol, to the enforcement authorities in Africa and Asia (but also from Latin America, US, Europe and Oceania), NGO's and international media.

The report was very well received and our team was extensively congratulated for this accomplishment.

I also received a couple of e-mails from Interpol HQ's in Switzerland with a message congratulating our CATCA/ACWF team for the initiative of doing this investigation, and another e-mail saying that they have saved this and all the other CATCA e-trade of wildlife investigative reports in their files "as good resources for future reference".

When delivering the report, I emphasized to the governments the importance of creating a section dedicated to monitor the e-trade of ivory and of wildlife, as this kind of trade is not only increasing worldwide, but this illegal wildlife trade also supports buying illegal weapons, organized crime, pirates and dictators, such as Koni.

Special thanks goes to all members of both teams that worked very hard researching the internet in several countries and languages for this investigation and in analysing the data.

This report is available to download in pdf.
