Maizee

A survivor

images/maizee.jpg

Maizee is a breed of chicken the industry refers to as a "broiler" or "meat bird". They are genetically altered to grow twice as fast and twice as large as their ancestors. "Broilers" grow so rapidly that the heart and lungs are not developed well enough to support the remainder of the body, resulting in congestive heart failure and tremendous death losses. These chickens also experience crippling leg disorders, as their legs are not capable of supporting their abnormally heavy bodies. Maizee was the only survivor in a group of forty and was spared death when the farmer decided not to slaughter her. At the sanctuary, she is the friendliest and most cuddly of all the chickens.
