2. Statement

Below are some sample letters you can copy/paste into your email. You are free to modify these as you wish to or create your own.

2.1 Sample Letter One

Please end this cruel usage of baby chicks as packing filler! Such abuse of animals should never be tolerated in our society.

2.2 Sample Letter Two

It is unfathomable that your company engages in this barbaric practice of using live baby chicks as packing filler! This animal abuse is unpardonable. We will certainly inform our contacts as well as other businesses of what goes on at not so Ideal Poultry Breeding Farms.

2.3 Sample Letter Three

I am shocked to learn Ideal Poultry Breeding Farms ships live baby chicks as packing material and I am respectfully requesting you discontinue this business; one, they may not survive shipping and two, the recipient may abuse, neglect, or even kill the baby chicks, especially those people inexperienced in the care of baby chicks.

Please allow me to elaborate. Animals are sentient beings, capable of thought and emotion, including love and suffering. I ask you to acknowledge this important condition that both humans and non-humans share. Animals are undeserving of this cruel legacy whereby they are exploited and suffered for human greed and egotistical motive, which only fosters the dangerous premise of acceptable suffering against all animals, human and non-human.

Please consider my request, immediately cease causing harm to these inquisitive and intelligent animals by discontinuing your participation in the breeding and shipping business. Many other companies have already made the decision to stop the transportation of animals for such unethical practices, and I hope you, too, make the similar decision. Animals have rights to live free from pain and suffering regardless of objections to acknowledge such; I therefore hope this message finds you willing to examine and subsequently change your potential complicity in their abuse and potential death.

Thank you for taking the time to read this importance request.

2.4 Sample Letter Four

I'm writing to urge you to stop shipping live baby chicks as packing material.

I would hope that the management at Ideal Poultry Breeding Farms will recognize the negative effect this current policy has, not only on the chicks, but on your reputation and overall business.

Please, for ethical, humane and economical reasons, will you change your policy immediately? To do otherwise is to further tarnish your reputation and ultimately put your bottom line at risk.

3.1 Live Baby Chicks Used as Packing Peanuts!

Ideal Poultry Breeding Farms, a company that sells and ships live birds, uses live baby chicks as packing material! According to complainants and Ideal Poultry's own website, male chicks are included as filler in live shipments so that the birds who were ordered can be kept warm during transit. Sadly, many of these filler chicks reportedly arrive dead or die within hours of arrival. One caller who adopted several ailing filler chicks from a neighbor contacted PETA with a heartbreaking story: She tended, fed, and watered her chicks with a dropper throughout their first night, but she could only watch as each one slowly died.

We reached out to Janet Crouch, the owner of Ideal Poultry, but our concerns were brushed off with the response that male chicks are used for warmth and to take up extra space in the box.

Your voice is needed! Please contact Janet Crouch using and let her know that live animals are not disposable and that using them as shipping material is inhumane! Please urge her to stop shipping live animals or, at the very least, to use heating packs in place of live chicks.

3.2 Baby Chicks Used as Packing Filler

Ideal Poultry Breeding Farms heartlessly uses them as packing peanuts.

The more we study chickens the more we learn about their amazing cognitive abilities and emotional capacities. They display empathy and are very intelligent birds. For years, Karen Davis, president of United Poultry Concerns, has been telling us how smart and emotional birds are and that they deserve far better treatment then they receive in food processing facilities, truly torture chambers, around the world. Accumulating data from research on chickens (and other birds) support her views.

Although chickens and many other animals are not protected by the Federal Animal Welfare Act in the United States and can be color-dyed and otherwise mistreated, I was still shocked and horrified to learn that baby chicks are used as packing filler, packing peanuts, by Ideal Poultry Breeding Farms so that the birds who were actually ordered can stay warm. This heartless and shameful practice is not a joke and many who are used are dead on the arrival of the package into which they were stuffed.

3.3 Veterinary Assessment of Shipping Live Birds as Airmail

Jean Cypher, DVM, To Whom It May Concern
For the past two and a half years I have worked in an exclusively avian practice. We treat neonatal birds daily. These range from parrots, songbirds and pigeons to domestic and wild fowl and farm birds such as ducks, pheasants, peafowl, chickens and ratites. In the latter groups, the most common illness we see is malabsorption of the yolk sac, usually stemming from problems in the nursery environment ...

Barry N. Taylor, DVM, To Whom It May Concern
I have been a practicing veterinarian for 10 years. My practice includes wild birds and poultry that have been raised as pets. In addition, I have kept chickens as pets for many years and consider them interesting and intelligent animals, as worth of humane treatment as cats, dogs, horses or livestock. Although I had been vaguely aware that baby chicks were often shipped around the country, I did not realize until it was brought to my attention by PETA that they were being handled by the US Postal Service with such a minimum of regard for their well being ...

Responses of Newly Hatched Chicks to Inanition
P.D. Warriss, S.C. Kestin, J.E. Edwards
Veterinary Record (1991), pp. 49-53
[Excerpts]
Newly hatched chicks were kept for up to 48* hours without food and water and compared with a control group of chicks given access to food and water within six hours of hatching. The deprived chicks progressively lost body water and developed increases in plasma volume. They demonstrated a stronger motivation to drink and drank more when offered water, suggesting that they had become dehydrated ...

*Northwest Airlines told The Wall Street Journal (Nov. 7, 2001) that between 60% and 80% of chicks have died on some flights, “often because of excessive heat or poor packaging by hatcheries.” Lawmakers Put Chicks’ Transport Up in the Air, by Devon Spurgeon and Stephen Power, WSJ, 11/7/2001. Northwest spokesman Kurt Ebenhoch explained why Northwest tried (unsuccessfully) to stop carrying live chicks as “perishables: “‘We were receiving crushed packages, they were sending us chicks when it was colder than ten degrees or warmer than 85 degrees, and they were sending us more than we could accommodate,’ resulting in the death of some 30 percent of chicks transported” (HSUS Humanelines, Sept. 6, 2001).
