Save Nevada Horses

US Fish & Wildlife is planning to kill wild horses

Dear Horse Defenders,

This is an urgent matter, time is crucial, and I am requesting your help on the matter.

I just received some information from a group of wild horse advocates that have been investigating plans by US Fish & Wildlife regarding the elimination of some wild horses that roam free on the Sheldon Fish & Wildlife Refuge in Nevada. They have discovered numerous NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) violations, as well as Compliance 106 Violations by Fish & Wildlife. They have also discovered that one of the 3 agents that Sheldon Fish & Wildlife have contracted with is associated with, and shares the same address as, known horse slaughter transporters.

These horses descend from the U.S. Calvary mounts and are an important part of our heritage and history. They roamed this land before the refuge had been established. They are not being introduced to the area, but were there first. Fish and Wildlife are determined to "eliminate" (words they use) these horses from the refuge, with the exception of a token "Hollywood" group. There are documented studies that show that by eliminating all but a few horses results in the decline of viability within the herd, and ultimately causing damage to the horse's stability. These are unprotected horses, unlike those from the Bureau of Land Management. The group's goal is to enforce some kind of protection, whether it be transferring responsibility to the Bureau of Land Management or forcing Fish & Wildlife to rewrite their management plans. These horses travel between the BLM's controlled Herd Management Area in southern Oregon called Beatty's Butte, and the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge.

With their current plans, many of these horses face ultimate death. The details go much deeper and I ask that you consider taking immediate action to support this issue and help stop the planned gather of these horses. The group is attempting, as I write, to bring about a stay for the next round up - which should occur in the next couple of weeks. I have attached an ealert that was sent to me.
