Tribute to lives lost at Saskatchewan slaughterhouse
On April 7th, 2009, the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (CHDC) announced by news release that the Saskatchewan horse slaughter plant, Natural Meat Company, had suspended operations due to food safety concerns, as determined by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
On April 13th, 2009, CHDC Central Region Director, Twyla Francois, paid tribute to the thousands of horses whose lives were lost at this Saskatchewan plant. During the previous week, hundreds of tributes had been pouring in to CHDC from people around the world. Near the massive graveyard of horse remains, Ms. Francois lay wreaths, poems and pictures in a symbolic ceremony to help bring closure to the suffering that so many Canadian and American horses endured at this slaughter plant.
