Auction Alert

Here is information you can use to help horses at auctions.

The CHDC knows that horses face great risks when they are sold through rural auctions. For example, almost all horses that are sold at the Ontario Livestock Exchange, or OLEX, are purchased by kill buyers who ship them to slaughter.

This is where the life of Charlie, the blind pony, nearly came to an end in August 2008. We invite you to read Charlie's story, to read about his rescue, and about the perils horses face when their luck runs out and are taken to auction.

Charlie's life has a happy ending, but every week thousands of horses walk their last steps from crowded kill buyers' trailers into the hell of Canadian horse slaughter plants. It's estimated that in 2008, over 100,000 horses' lives will end, to satisfy horsemeat consumers overseas.

To assist Canadians in taking action, we've compiled information to help you help the horses!

We invite you to print and copy our Auction Flyer to distribute at auctions, or leave on the windshields of cars and trucks located there. Many people are not aware that their horse may be purchased by a kill buyer. They naively think that their horse will somehow go to a good home.

We also have collected a list of auctions with some upcoming sales dates for the remainder of 2008. We encourage horse defenders to attend these auctions, distribute flyers and observe the care and handling of the horses.

If horses are found to be in distress due to neglect or cruelty, you can find who to contact to help from this list of who to call.

When people become aware of the dangers their horses face when sold through auctions, it is hoped that many will reconsider their actions. Please feel free to contact the CHDC for more information at info@defendhorsescanada.org.

and into the protected pastures of a civilized nation."
